The cap itself has to match the liner’s diameter and the chimney crown’s shape. Here’s the gotcha we see in Bristol all the time: a homeowner reads “DuraFlex” off an old inspection report, buys a universal cap from the hardware store, and it either doesn’t seat onto the liner or it blocks proper draft. Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. The cap’s top hood has rusted through or the mesh has warped enough to let water run down the liner. In Bristol, the freeze-thaw cycles up near Lake Compounce accelerate this faster than most of New England.
- Down-drafting or smoke backing into the room. Wind baffles only work when they’re intact. Once a cap corrodes or the rivets loosen, the cap loses its directional function, and every north wind becomes a problem.

If your chimney is a one-story ranch with a shallow roof pitch and you’re comfortable on a ladder, swapping a cap is a half-hour job you can absolutely do yourself, provided you buy the right diameter and seat it correctly. A stainless cap on a stainless liner should last 10 to 15 years in this climate. Aluminum caps and aftermarket units with thinner mesh go 5 to 8 years at best. The wildcard is Bristol’s freeze-thaw cycle, which stresses the seams and rivets harder than the caps get credit for.
