Gelco Chimney Cap & Crown Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

This page is for Bristol homeowners who already have Gelco on their chimney, or who are weighing Gelco against other brands. We’ve pulled apart enough Gelco installations in this town to know where they hold up, where they don’t, and what’s worth fixing versus replacing. No fluff. Just what we’ve learned on roofs and ladders here.

How Gelco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

Gelco makes a solid product, but nothing lasts forever on top of a chimney in New England. Here’s what we actually see on Bristol roofs when a Gelco cap or crown goes bad.

  • Rust-through on Gelco’s galvanized single-flue caps. Most Gelco caps start life with a galvanized base and lid. After five or six Bristol winters of freeze-thaw and the sulfur in wood smoke, the seams around the base plate start to bleed rust. By year eight, the corners fail first. We replace the cap with either a new Gelco unit or a heavier-gauge aftermarket cap that matches the flue size, and we treat the mounting area so the new cap doesn’t sit in standing water.
  • Screen clogging turns a good Gelco cap into a draft killer. Gelco’s mesh screens are fine enough to keep squirrels out, which means they’re also fine enough to clog with creosote if the chimney doesn’t get swept on schedule. In Bristol, we see this most often on wood-burning fireplaces over near Lake Compounce and the older neighborhoods off Farmington Avenue. The cap looks fine from the ground, but the flue is barely breathing. We pull the cap, clean the screen, and if it’s too far gone, swap in a new one and show you the old one before it goes in the truck.
  • Gelco crown deterioration at the flue-collar joint. The crown is the concrete or mortar slab that seals the top of the chimney around the flue. On Gelco installations, the weakest point is almost always where the crown meets the flue tile or the cap’s mounting bracket. Water gets in through hairline cracks, freezes, and opens the gap wider. We repair this with a crown coating system that flexes with the chimney instead of cracking again in two seasons.
  • Mismatched aftermarket caps on Gelco multi-flue setups. A lot of Bristol homes with two flues running through one chimney have Gelco caps that were ordered for the wrong flue spacing. The result is a cap that doesn’t seat properly and lets rain in at the corners. We measure the actual flue layout and order the correct cap or fabricate a custom one that fits the chimney, not the other way around.
  • Bird and critter entry through Gelco’s older louvered models. Gelco’s older louvered caps had side vents that were generous enough for starlings. The birds nest, block airflow, and the nest material holds moisture against the cap’s interior. We pull those nests, install a proper screen barrier, and if the louvers are rusted shut, that cap’s done and we’ll tell you plainly.

Our Gelco Chimney Cap & Crown Process

Here’s how a Gelco job goes when you call Top Hat Chimney.

  1. 1
You call, a person answers. It might be Wendell. You tell us what’s going on, and we schedule a time that actually works for you.
  2. 2
We inspect from the roof, not the driveway. Wendell or a crew member gets on the roof, checks the cap and crown up close, and puts eyes on the flue condition underneath.
  3. 3
You see what we see. We take photos on a phone camera, show you the rust, the cracks, the nests, whatever’s there. You never take our word for it blind.
  4. 4
We give you options with prices. OEM Gelco if you want the exact replacement, or a quality aftermarket part if the math favors it. We tell you which we’d pick and why. The price we quote on the phone or up front is the price on the invoice.
  5. 5
The work gets done the same day. Cap installation or replacement, crown repair or coating, multi-flue or custom cap. We clean up after ourselves and haul away the old parts.
  6. 6
The 90-Day Done Right Promise applies. If it’s not right, one call brings us back. That’s in writing on every job.

What Gelco Chimney Cap & Crown Costs in Bristol

You won’t find hard numbers on the Gelco site, so here’s what we actually charge around Bristol.

  • Gelco single-flue cap replacement: $145-$285, depending on flue size and whether the mounting plate needs work.
  • Multi-flue cap, custom trimmed: $380-$750. The spread depends on how wide the flue grouping is and whether we’re drilling into the crown or using a slip-in design.
  • Crown repair (cracks and minor spalling): $175-$400. We use a flexible crown sealant that moves with the chimney.
  • Full crown rebuild: $900-$1,800. This is a full demolition, form, and pour. It’s the big one, but sometimes it’s the only right answer.

What moves the price: roof access, chimney height, flue tile condition, and whether the old cap welded itself to the flue. We’ll tell you the exact number after we look at it. Estimates are free, and we don’t charge a trip fee inside our service county. Call (860) 743-7743 for a quote.

Why Bristol Homeowners Call Top Hat Chimney for Gelco Work

We’ve been fixing chimneys around Bristol since 1999, and Wendell Pike has been up on enough of these roofs to know exactly what a Gelco cap looks like after five Connecticut winters. We’re not a franchise that rotated a van into town last spring. We live here. You’ll see us at the hardware store on Saturday.

If your Gelco cap or crown needs work, we’ll tell you straight. If it doesn’t need anything yet, we’ll tell you that too, and we’ll tell you why. We carry parts for Gelco, DuraFlex, HeatShield, Olympia, Famco, and Copperfield, so we’re not married to one brand when another part fits your chimney better. And every job leaves with the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. One call brings us back. No arguing, no fine print.
