Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

• Handle spins without resistance. The pivot pin or the handle-to-plate connection has stripped. On the C Series, the square drive on the handle shears off before the plate does. This is the most common failure in Bristol homes, because the damper gets worked hard every fall when people start burning again.
• Plate won’t stay open or closed. The counterbalance spring, where one is fitted, has lost tension or snapped. On LD Series dampers in particular, that light spring corrodes fast in Connecticut humidity and stops holding the plate where you set it.
• Cold air pours in even when closed. The plate has warped, or the frame has shifted in the masonry. Older Bristol chimneys near Lake Compounce settle over the years, and a frame that moves an eighth of an inch makes a Famco damper seal worse than no damper at all.
• Rust flakes falling into the firebox. The plate or frame is corroding from moisture coming down the flue. Once rust gets into the pivot hardware, the plate seizes and the handle bends or breaks when you force it.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s one honest check an owner can do safely: with the fire completely cold and the damper closed, shine a flashlight up from the firebox and look for daylight leaking around the plate edges. If you can see a gap, the seal is gone and the damper isn’t doing its job. What you should not do is try to remove the plate or pins yourself. The hardware is inside the smoke chamber, above the firebox opening, and if the plate drops while you’re under it, it’s a heavy piece of cast iron. On top of that, the screws and pins are often rust-welded in place, and the angle is awkward enough that you’ll strip a threaded boss and turn a $200 repair into a full frame job.
