Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Fireplace Services in Bristol: What to Know First
We service Gelco fireplaces and inserts throughout Bristol, and most jobs are done in a single visit. A typical Gelco service call runs between $140 and $310 depending on what we find once the glass comes off. We’re an independent Gelco service provider, not a factory-authorized shop, which means we can use either OEM Gelco parts or proven aftermarket alternatives without voiding your warranty. If you own a Gelco unit and something’s not right, call (860) 743-7743 and Wendell or one of his crew will give it to you straight.
This page is for Bristol homeowners with a Gelco gas or wood-burning fireplace that needs attention. Whether it’s a pilot light that won’t stay lit, a blower that’s gotten noisy, or a firebox showing cracks, we’ve probably seen that exact problem on that exact model more times than we can count.

How Gelco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them
- Standing pilot won’t stay lit (Gelco gas logs, older 90s units). Bristol’s hard water and humid summers are rough on thermocouples and thermopiles. The pilot generates a weak millivolt signal, so the valve thinks the flame died and shuts off. We clean the pilot assembly, test output with a meter, and replace the thermopile when it’s under spec. That’s usually a same-day fix.
- Blower noise on Gelco inserts. The blower motors Gelco used on some mid-2000s insert models start humming or knocking once the bearings wear. We pull the blower, clean the squirrel cage, and if it’s shot, we quote a replacement before touching anything. Sometimes the noise is just the cage hitting a bent bracket, which costs about a third of what a new blower does.
- Log set degradation on wood-burning Gelco units. Bristol’s winters mean real firewood, and real firewood cracks ceramic log sets faster than owners expect. Gelco’s ceramic logs on older models are thicker than most aftermarket replacements, but once they crack along the seams, they can break deeper within a season. We carry compatible log sets for common Gelco models and match the flame pattern so it still looks right.
- Glass gasket failure on Gelco doors. The fiberglass tape gasket behind the glass gets brittle after about five to seven years of regular burning. You’ll see soot streaking on the glass near the corners, and the draft will feel weaker. We replace the gasket, re-seat the glass with the right torque so it doesn’t crack, and test the door seal with a dollar-bill check before we leave.
- Firebox refractory panels cracking on Gelco zero-clearance units. The panels heat and cool constantly, and after enough seasons they crack along the seams or crumble at the edges. Bristol’s temperature swings between January and July make this worse. We have refractory panel kits for most Gelco zero-clearance boxes; if yours are near the end, we’ll show you the damage on camera and tell you honestly whether it can wait another season.
Our Gelco Fireplace Services Process
- 1
You call, Wendell’s phone rings. A live person answers, even at midnight. You describe the symptom in your own words. We ask a few questions about the model and the age. You get a price range, not a guess.
- 2
The sweep shows up on time. Background-checked, in uniform, with a real arrival window. Gelco jobs usually mean pulling the glass, so we bring the right gasket material and a torque screwdriver if that’s on the menu.
- 3
We diagnose with the unit cold and hot. For gas, we watch the flame, check the millivolt output, inspect the burner ports. For wood, we look at the firebox, the log set, the damper. You get a camera look if something needs a second eye.
- 4
The parts decision happens before work begins. If Gelco OEM parts make sense, we quote them. If a known-good aftermarket part does the same job for less, we quote that instead. You approve the number. Then we work.
- 5
The repair, the test, the cleanup. Every Gelco job gets tested the way you’ll actually use it, not just a quick flame check. We run the blower, test the pilot, cycle the valve. We leave the area cleaner than we found it.
- 6
90-Day Done Right Promise. If anything we touched acts up within 90 days, one call brings Wendell back. No invoice, no argument.
What Gelco Fireplace Services Cost in Bristol
Here’s what Bristol homeowners typically pay for Gelco work. Pricing is honest, upfront, and the number you hear on the phone is the number on the invoice.
- Gelco gas fireplace service call, pilot and burner cleaning, thermal test: $140-$190
- Thermocouple or thermopile replacement with OEM spec part: $180-$270
- Blower motor replacement on a Gelco insert: $210-$340
- Glass gasket replacement, including new tape and re-seat: $120-$200
- Refractory panel kit installed (common zero-clearance models): $350-$550
- Full Gelco fireplace inspection with camera (visual or thermal): $110-$160
What moves the price is parts availability. Some Gelco OEM parts have a longer lead time than comparable aftermarket pieces. We’ll always tell you if OEM is worth the wait and the cost, or if you’d be better served spending less. Call (860) 743-7743 for a free estimate, and remember: seniors and veterans always get 10% off, and we don’t charge a trip fee inside the county.
Why Bristol Homeowners Call Top Hat Chimney for Gelco Work
Wendell Pike has been driving Bristol roads and getting into fireboxes since 1999. He’s opened Gelco units all over town, including plenty of older homes over near Lake Compounce where the flues tell their own story. He learned the trade at Southwestern College outside San Diego, then put in the years of dirty, honest work before Top Hat Chimney became what it is today. If it needs doing, we will do it right. If it does not, I will tell you that instead.
We’re not a franchise that rotated into town last spring. We’re the local owner-operated shop that answers the phone around the clock, quotes a flat price before the first tool comes off the truck, and backs every Gelco job with a written 90-Day Done Right Promise. We also work with DuraFlex and HeatShield products, so if your Gelco job turns into a liner question, we can handle that too without sending you to another outfit. Ask anyone on your street.
FAQs
No. Independent service providers using OEM or equivalent parts are allowed under standard Gelco warranty terms. We’re not a Gelco-authorized shop, but the work we do and the parts we use are fully compliant. Call (860) 743-7743 and we’ll explain exactly what applies to your unit.
Most of them, yes. Gelco discontinued some of their early 90s gas valve parts, but we have sources for nearly everything else: log sets, gaskets, refractory panels, blowers, and pilot assemblies. For the few parts that are truly gone, we’ll show you a compatible aftermarket option and explain the difference before you spend a dime. Free estimates at (860) 743-7743.
We book based on real availability, not manufactured urgency. Most Gelco service calls in Bristol happen within a few days, and if it’s a safety issue, like gas odor or visible firebox damage, we make room faster. Call (860) 743-7743 and a live person will give you a straight answer about scheduling.
We’ll tell you honestly. If the firebox and venting are in good shape and the repair is under $500, repair usually wins. If you’re looking at a cracked heat exchanger, a failed valve on a 30-year-old unit, or refractory panels that are end-of-life, replacement may be the better money. We’ll show you the camera footage and a plain-English verdict, every time, no exceptions. Call for a free assessment.
In our experience with Bristol Gelco units, that’s usually the thermopile not generating enough millivolts to open the main gas valve, or it’s a partially clogged burner orifice. Both are fixable in a single visit for most Gelco models. Call (860) 743-7743 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing before we even schedule.
